Covington Three Rivers Art Festival

  • The Three Rivers Art Festival (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The historic downtown district of Covington takes art seriously and is home to a number of galleries representing the region’s best artists. So it should come as no surprise that the town’s annual Three Rivers Art Festival, held each November, also is serious enough to carefully jury the 200 artists invited to participate in an event that takes over several city blocks.

The result is a vibrant celebration of art. Works in every medium are represented in the booths lining both sides of Columbia Street: ceramics, paintings, photography, fiber art, woodworking, metal work, sculptures, jewelry and more.

Though Louisiana and the Gulf Coast are well represented, artists come from 28 states, from as far away as Virginia, Missouri, Massachusetts and Arkansas, to participate in this fun, high-quality art festival.

There’s no admission charge to get into the festival and parking is free, too. November’s often glorious weather and the picturesque, historic buildings of downtown Covingtonprovide a beautiful backdrop for the arts festival that attracts as many as 50,000 visitors each fall.

In addition to the art booths, there is a Children’s Discovery Area and an arts demonstration tent where you can watch artists make pottery or blow glass. And, this being Louisiana, of course there is music and food. The culinary arts are represented almost as well as the visual arts at this event where local restaurants, food trucks and vendors serve up everything from turkey gumbo, crawfish etouffée, and shrimp and grits to gyros, tacos and deep-fried brownies. How about an alligator sausage po-boy? Uh huh. You heard that right.

The Three Rivers Art Festival is a great place to find a work of art that speaks to you and to shop for the holidays.

ST. TAMMANY CRAB FESTIVAL

ST. TAMMANY CRAB FESTIVAL

  • St. Tammany Parish Tourist & Convention Center (map)

The St. Tammany Crab Festival celebrates the cantankerous crustacean with a huge two-day party in Slidell’s Heritage Park. The fun festival features non-stop live music, Battle of the Bands, a classic car show, boat rides, kids games and activities and, of course, the star of the show, crabs galore.

Known for decades as the Lacombe Crab Fest, the event moved to Slidell in 2016. The venue may have changed, but the joyous celebration of Louisiana food and culture has not. Families come prepared for a day of fun outdoors, using umbrellas, hats and visors to shield them from the sun. There’s dancing everywhere, even in the food booth lines, and good vibes in the air.
